Literary Validation

I’m just joking … for the most part … 🙂 However, as a writer, it’s always nice when your work is taken seriously. In this case, two of my poems were picked up for publication by my university’s lit mag, The GNU. So, I’m stoked and thought I’d share.

Words and sound
mesh til feelings abound

Lyrical poetry
becomes melodic flowetry

Melody or cacophony
move me equally

Voices lifted in song
pull me along
in their wake
I want all I can take

Lyrics and beats
rhythm and blues
these are my pews
where I worship
upon a musical
altar

Arms lifted
head thrown back
hips swaying

Wishing I could
forever be staying
in the grip of this
musical muse

How I beg you
to use me

I know my soul
would be free
if I could raise my voice
melodically

But this talent
was denied me

Instead, I scribe
my life’s flowetry
in lyric poetry

Syllables for notes
Stanzas for verses
Meter my cadence

Through poetry I
achieve my own
soulful radiance

As I labor
over each line
each rhyme

In offering
to my muse
upon her
poetic shrine

——————————–

Relativity

Families
are knit
tight

Ever willing
to unite
together in joy,
pain, love
or fear

Families
hold one
another dear,
share
tears, dreams
and hopes

The ropes
of blood
run thicker
than water…

But wait,
I can’t
continue
down this path
of misconception

“Blood thicker
than water”
is certainly
not my perception

When being
a daughter
means
serving yourself
up to
the slaughter
of your soul

Where sisters
compete
their spirits
only replete
when they
dance
on the ashes
of your dreams

Where a father’s
silence
is really
passive violence
as his
disregard
shatters
your heart

Of this “family”
I want
no part

Decades
I spent
resisting
their constant
insisting
that I fail

Fighting
in vain
to earn
their
respect

Til
one day
it was
made plain …

I must
leave them
behind
else lose
my mind!

With
my feet
on this path
I shed
my wrath

And renounced
this “familial”
negativity

Now, once and for all
I’ve consigned them
to relativity.
